Als Länder übergreifendes Projekt präsentiert die Cetinje Biennale V unter dem Titel „Love it or Leave it“ bis 19. September 2004 über 80 künstlerische Positionen aus Südosteuropa und dem Nahen Osten in Cetinje/Montenegro, Dubrovnik/Kroatien und Tirana/Albanien. Die 5. Cetinje Biennale wird realisiert durch das Nationalmuseum von Montenegro in Zusammenarbeit mit der Kunsthalle Fridericianum.

Erweitertes kulturelles Terrain

Mit ihrer Konzeption entwirft die 5. Cetinje Biennale ein erweitertes kulturelles Terrain. Verbirgt sich hinter dem Slogan „Love it or Leave it“ häufig politische Demagogie, verspricht diese Biennale, einen unvoreingenommenen Blick auf die historische und gegenwärtige kulturelle Situation der Kunst aus der südöstlichen Region Europas unter Einbeziehung des Nahen Osten zu nehmen.

Der Balkanraum – Transitbereich zum Nahen Osten

Mit etwa 80 Beiträgen zeigt „Love it or Leave it“ Entwicklungslinien auf, die zentrale, in den späten 60ern und 70ern entwickelte Positionen (Marina Abramovic, Cengiz Cekil, Mangelos, Sarkis, Ilija Soskic etc.) mit Künstlern der folgenden Generationen bis hin zur jüngsten Kunstproduktion (Fikret Atay, Maja Bajevic, Mircea Cantor, Jakup Ferri, Anri Sala, Jelena Tomasevic, Natalija Vujosevic etc.) miteinander verbindet. Quellen und Ursprünge der gegenwärtigen künstlerischen Situation unterschiedlicher Regionen treten in Dialog zueinander.
„Love it or Leave it“ spürt Verwandtschaften und Differenzen innerhalb der jeweiligen politischen und kulturellen Bedingungen und Praktiken auf, die die allgemeine Auffassung des Balkans und des Nahen Ostens als Regionen unterschiedlicher Wertesysteme hinterfragen. Der Balkanraum positioniert sich als Teil Europas mit seinen politischen und ökonomischen Systemen, bildet aber zugleich den Transitbereich zum Nahen Osten.

Cetinje – Dubrovnik – Tirana

Dieser Idee folgt die Ausführung: In Reaktion auf die jüngsten Entwicklungen und dem Fehlen einer Länder übergreifenden Zusammenarbeit auf kulturpolitischer Ebene wird die Cetinje Biennale V über nationale Grenzen hinausgehen. Parallel werden in Cetinje, Tirana und Dubrovnik Videoarbeiten und Installationen gezeigt sowie Workshops durchgeführt.
Zum Auftakt der Biennale am 17. Juli in Dubrovnik werden vier spannungsreiche künstlerische Strategien einander gegenübergestellt werden: extreme Schnitte in den Arbeiten von Ömer Ali Kazma (Istanbul) und Olaf Metzel (München) treffen auf ephemere Notate von Nedko Solakov (Sofia) und Dan Perjovschi (Bukarest).
Gleichzeitig startet hier das Video-Programm mit Arbeiten von 31 Künstlerinnen und Künstlern, das parallel, aber zeitlich versetzt, an den drei Biennale-Orten gezeigt wird (In Cetinje ab 20. Juli mit der Eröffnung der Ausstellung „Orchid“).

Europäische Zusammenarbeit

„Love it or Leave it“ bildet den Kulminationspunkt eines neuen Modells der europäischen Zusammenarbeit: Kuratiert von René Block, Kassel, und Natasa Ilić, Zagreb, wird die 5. Biennale von Cetinje als Teil des Projektes „In den Städten des Balkan“ realisiert - dem zweiten Teil der von der Kunsthalle Fridericianum, Kassel, Deutschland, initiierten „Balkan Trilogie“. Dieses Projekt begann 2003 mit der Ausstellung „In den Schluchtend es Balkan“ in Kassel und endet nun mit „Balkan Trilogy #3“, in der die Ausstellungen “Mangelos nos. 1 – 9 ½”, “Marjetica Potrc: summerhouse” und “Jasmila Zbanic: we light the night” präsentiert werden (Kunsthalle Fridericianum, Kassel, bis 19. September).

Die Cetinje Biennale fand zum ersten Mal 1991 statt. Gegründet von Prinz Nikola Petrovic Njegos trug sie schon damals zum kulturellen Austausch zwischen Ost- und Westeuropa bei. Heute steht sie als ein maßgebliches Kunstereignis des Balkans für die Öffnung der Region und den internationalen Austausch.

Cetinje Biennial V „Love it or Leave it“ will present 80 artistic positions from South-Eastern Europe and the Middle East. Satellite projects in Dubrovnik/Croatia and Tirana/Albania furthermore implies a unique cross-national activity. Cetinje Biennial V is realized by the National museum of Montenegro in cooperation with the Kunsthalle Fridericianum.

An expanded cultural area
The concept of Cetinje Biennial V designs an expanded cultural area. Although political demagogy is often hidden behind the slogan „Love it or Leave it“, this Biennale promises to give an unprejudiced view on the historical and current situation of art in the South-Eastern region of Europe with an expansion to the Middle East, by presenting 80 artistic positions from these two areas.

The Balkans – Transit area to the Middle East
„Love it or Leave it“, with 80 artistic contributions will show development directions, which bring central positions of the late 60ies and 70ies like Sarkis, Marina Abramovic, Cengiz Cekil, Mangelos, Ilija Soskic etc. into relations with the artists of the following generations up to very young art production by artists like Anri Sala, Mircea Cantor, Fikret Atay, Natalija Vujosevic, Jelena Tomasevic, Jakup Ferri etc. Sources and origins of the current artistic situation of two different regions will step into dialogue.
„Love it or Leave it“ is tracing affinities and differences within the cultural and political conditions and practices, which according to the general perception question the Balkans and the Middle East as two regions with different value systems. Applying its political and economical systems the Balkan positions itself as part of Europe but represents at the same time the transit area to the Middle East.

Cetinje – Dubrovnik – Tirana
The elaboration of the exhibition translates this idea: reacting to recent developments and the constant lack of cultural-political cross-national cooperation Cetinje Biennial V will cross national borders. Parallel to the exhibition in Cetinje, Tirana and Dubrovnik will show video works and installations as well as a program of workshops.
The Biennial starts off on July 17 in Dubrovnik with four exciting artistic strategies confronting each other: extreme cuts in the works of Ömer Ali Kazma (Istanbul) and Olaf Metzel (Munich) meet the fading notations of Nedko Solakov (Sofia) and Dan Perjovschi (Bucharest). At the same time a film and video program with the works of 31 artists will start and during the Biennale it will be shown at the three Biennial venues.
(In Cetinje it will accompany the opening of the exhibition “Orchid” on July 20)

An European Cooperation
„Love it or Leave it“ is culmination point of a new model for a unique European cooperation: curated by René Block, Kassel, and Natasa Ilic, Zagreb, Cetinje Biennial V is realized as part of „In the cities of the Balkans“- 2nd part of the „Balkans Trilogy“, a project initiated by the Kunsthalle Fridericianum, Kassel, Germany. This project started in Kassel with the exhibition “In the Gorges of the Balkans” (2003) and ends now with “Balkan Trilogy #3”, presenting the exhibitions “Mangelos nos. 1 – 9 ½”, “Marjetica Potrc: summerhouse” and “Jasmila Zbanic: we light the night” (Kunsthalle Fridericianum, Kassel, until September 19).
Cetinje Biennale presented itself for the first time in 1991. Founded by Prince Nikola Petrovic Njegos, it was meant to contribute to the cultural exchange between East and West Europe. Today it stands for one of the most relevant art events, which opened the region of the Balkans for the international exchange.
