Im April 1968 sah sich der documenta-Rat in Kassel mit einem Manifest des "INTERFUNKTION TEAM FÜR KUNSTPSYCHOLOGISCHE STUDIEN KÖLN" konfrontiert, worin die Auswahlkriterien für die documenta 4 als "unsachlich und autoritär im Anspruch" beschimpft wurden. Das Manifest verwies dabei auf das Fehlen neuer künstlerischer Formen der 60er Jahre, die jenseits von Tafelbild, Grafik und Skulptur wie kaum jemals zuvor den Bild- und Werkbegriff und in der Folge den Kunstbegriff insgesamt revolutioniert haben. Das Aufbegehren kam außerdem zu einem Zeitpunkt, als über den bereits bestehenden kulturellen Zweifel hinaus auch ein gesellschaftlicher und politischer Konflikt offen ausbrach, dessen Folgen ebenfalls bis heute spürbar sind. Aus dem anfangs direkten künstlerischen und intellektuellen Protest gegen das Kunstestablishment ging dann ein Projekt hervor, das für einige Jahre in Opposition zu Kunstmarkt und Ausstellungen den neuen künstlerischen Tendenzen ein Forum bilden sollte, die Zeitschrift interfunktionen.

Die insgesamt 12, von 1968 bis 1975 erschienenen Ausgaben von interfunktionen - davon die ersten zehn von Friedrich W. Heubach und die letzten zwei von Benjamin H.D. Buchloh herausgegeben - versammeln eine Fülle von Dokumentationen künstlerischer Projekte und Strategien sowie Werke, die von Anfang an als Drucksache konzipiert waren. Dazu kommen theoretische Essays und Dokumente öffentlicher Debatten um aktuelle kulturpolitische Ereignisse. Die Zeitschrift war von Beginn an offen gegenüber allen Medien und Genres, vor allem mit Blick auf die gesellschaftliche und politische Bedeutung der neuen konzeptuellen Kunst in Europa und den USA. Damit ebnete interfunktionen nicht zuletzt auch der documenta 5 das Terrain, die 1972 als wichtige Zäsur in der Geschichte der Kasseler Ausstellung erstmals den Aufbruch der 60er Jahre in größerem Umfang reflektierte - ein Erfolg also auch in bezug auf den Gegenstand des ursprünglichen Protestes.

Die Ausstellung behind the facts. interfunktionen 1968 - 1975 nimmt die Inhalte der Zeitschrift sowie den Zeitraum ihres Erscheinens als Rahmen, um den außerordentlichen künstlerischen Wandel jener Jahre anschaulich zu machen. Die 43 internationalen Künstlerinnen und Künstler, deren Werke hier gezeigt werden, repräsentieren einerseits die radikale Erweiterung der traditionellen Bildformen durch Land Art, Happenings, Interventionen im städtischen Außenraum und in den Printmedien, Objekte, Installationen, Filme und fotografische Sequenzen. Andererseits zeigt sich sowohl in diesen Formen als auch in den Themen ein sich verändernder, zweifelnder aber auch poetischer Blick auf eine Realität, die sich mit dem Begriff des "Sichtbaren" alleine nicht mehr beschreiben läßt und in der sich kulturelle, wissenschaftliche und gesellschaftliche Dinge zu verbinden scheinen - ein auch heute noch verblüffend frischer Blick.

In Kassel wird behind the facts. interfunktionen 1968 - 1975 außerdem um zusätzliches Material aus dem Archiv des Gründers von interfunktionen, Friedrich W. Heubach, ergänzt.

A production of the Fundação de Serralves, Porto and the Fundació Joan Miró, Barcelona in cooperation with the Kunsthalle Fridericianum, Kassel.

In April 1968 the documenta council in Kassel was confronted with a manifest published by the so-called INTERFUNKTION TEAM FOR ART PSYCHOLOGICAL STUDIES COLOGNE in which the selection criteria for documenta 4 was berated as "non-objective and authoritarian in its claim". This Manifest thereby referred to the lack of new artistic forms of the 60es, which apart from Painting, Graphic and Sculpture revolutionized the idea of image and work like never before and as a consequence of this the whole idea of art. Additionally this protest happened at a time when the already existing cultural scepticism was overwhelmed by the break out of a social and political conflict of which the effects can be felt until today. Emerging from this original artistic and intellectual protest against the art establishment was a project which opposed the art market and exhibitions for a few years by building a new forum for new artistic trends: the magazine interfunktionen.

These 12 editions of interfunktionen issued from 1968 until 1975 - of which the first ten were published by Friedrich w. Heubach and the last two by Benjamin H.D. Buchloh - gather a plenitude of documentations of artistic projects and strategies as well as conceptual works which were meant solely as printed matter, theoretical essays and documents on public debates about actual culture-political subjects. From the first day on this magazine was very open towards all media and genres, especially focusing on the social and political meaning of new conceptual art in Europe and the USA. Therefore and last but not least interfunktionen also paved the way for documenta 5, which in 1972 for the first time reflected on large scale the start-up of the 60es. An important break in the history of this Kassel exhibition - and also a success concerning the issue of the original protest.

The exhibition behind the facts. interfunktionen 1968 - 1975 is taking the contents of this magazine as well as the period of its release as a frame to demonstrate the extraordinary artistic changes of those years. The works of 43 international artists shown in this exhibition are on the one hand representing the radical expansion of traditional image forms through land art, happenings, and interventions in urban spaces and in the print media, objects, installations, films and photographical sequences. On the other hand these forms as well as the topics are revealing a changing and doubting but also poetic view on a reality, which cannot be described with the single expression "visible" anymore and in which cultural, scientific and social aspects seem to combine - still today a rather astonishingly fresh view.
