Kassel. The number of contemporary art biennials is steadily increasing - a survey of the whole spectrum has become virtually impossible. With the exhibition "Song of the Earth" and the conference "Biennials in Dialogue", the Artistic Director of the Kunsthalle Museum Fridericianum René Block aims to create this lost overview and initiate a long overdue communication between the various biennials.
While the exhibition "Song of the Earth" focuses on the world's eight most important biennials - symbolically represented through a selection of artists from the respective countries -, the international conference "Biennials in Dialogue" (3-6 August 2000) allows the institutional widening and discursive deepening of global dialogue.

The great number of new biennials in particular, makes the networking between institutions increasingly important. Held in the Documenta-Halle in the German town of Kassel, this international conference offers curators and directors of contemporary art biennials world-wide the opportunity to meet in more intimate circles to exchange experiences and discuss their approaches and aims. There will be over thirty participants including Thierry Raspail (Lyon Biennial), Saskia Bos (Berlin Biennial), Madeleine Grynsztejn (Carnegie International Pittsburgh), Fulya Erdemci and Yuko Hasegawa (Istanbul Biennial), Yong Woo Lee and You Yeong Kim (Kwangju Biennial), Zhang Quin (Shanghai Biennial), Yulin Lee (Taipeh Biennial), Paula Latos-Valier (Sydney Biennial), Nelson Herrera Isla and Lilian Llanes (Havanna Biennial), Rémi Sagna (Dakar Biennial), Clive Kellner (Johannesburg Biennial) and Okwui Enwezor (Documenta11).

To guarantee a high level of efficiency, the conference begins with internal meetings. Saturday though is entirely dedicated to the public. Those interested can participate in simultaneously translated presentations and panel discussions on the subject. To be expected are, among other things, first insights into the conception of the next biennials in Havanna, Berlin and Istanbul. After the continuation of the public panel discussion, the conference will finish on Sunday with an equally open public round-table debate. The expectation is that it will also conclude as a prelude to further biennial-conferences.

The conference is co-organised by the Museum Fridericianum and the Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen (Stuttgart) with support from the Kulturabteilung des Auswärtigen Amtes (Berlin), the Hessische Kulturstiftung (Wiesbaden), the Australia Council (Sydney), the Corean Culture and Arts Foundation (Seoul), the AFAA - Bureau des Arts Plastiques in Germany and Arts International (New York).

Participation charges for the part of the conference open to the public (Saturday August 5, 11am - 9pm and Sunday August 6, 10am - 3pm) are DM 20.00/ DM 15.00 reductions (including admission to the exhibition "Song of the Earth").

Place: Documenta-Halle, Du-Ry-Straße, 34117 Kassel (entrance Friedrichplatz).
