I Supply! You Demand? (Schadenfreude Guided Tours), 2003 Project for: In den Schluchten des Balkan I do not know whether actual visitors to an art event need to have a live artist at hand in order to ask questions about the work(s), his/hers or others’ in case it’s a group show. All I know is that after the opening, artists are usually no longer needed by the organizer of an art event. I have learned that the sooner I leave the “site of the crime”, the better. But I have rarely been able to see who the hell is actually going to the shows I am participating in and why. So far, I have yet no idea if what I am about to supply, guided tours of a show of contemporary art, will meet the demand of the audience. I am simply a provider of a service, which possibly no one will need. I am making myself available to guide visitors of the show but I have never been able to figure out the dialectics of supply and demand. Hopefully, if something is supplied the demand will soon follow. At least I plan to supply more then just artsy explanations… For instance, my poor fellow artists who will not be around when I will be giving the tours will have no control over what I will say to the audience about their works… Schadenfreude, or as we English speaking artists say, “Sorry, boys and girls!” On the other hand, the “universal” art world wisdom says that Kassel in-between documenta exhibitions is as loose and “fragile” in terms of audience, events and artistic career opportunities as any medium sized Balkan city. I will get back to you with a short report after the event when I will have a better idea about all of that. Luchezar Boyadjiev Sofia, July 8, 2003 |
