MIHA VIPOTNIK
As the man says; ‘a story without an idea that´s an obsession.’ There are two possibilities, either the writer or videast has no notion of what he wants, or he wants his stories to exist without logic, without continuity, without saying ‘pay attention, look here’. The first produces nothing or worse rubbish, the second is despite himself and thus thanks to himself, meaningful literature/video. With Vipotnik we are dealing with the latter possibility. He regroups Andraž Šalamun`s texts (on human ambition from Icarus to Gustav von Aschenbach) and thus aligns himself with the linguistic power of automatic writing, action writing and poetry performances, in a flood of newly created impulses and associations. The visual side is somewhat less pregnant but fortunately does not revert to videotic nonsense. The image is the logical side of the coin serving infatuating with speaking and love of language. As the man says we use only 10% of our brains, only God and Vipotnik know what’s in the rest. From the catalogue Kijkhuis World Wide VIDEO Festival 1984, The Hague |
