12. April bis 14. Mai 2006

April 12 - May 14, 2006

The Lebanese artist Jalal Toufic investigates the multiple relations between language and culture and how culture deals with collective memory. As author, film theoretician, and video artist, he shifts smoothly between the media and their specific forms of expression, and is regarded as a representative of a new, intellectual art scene in Beirut. Many of his video works are concerned in a differentiated fashion with psychological or religious phenomena.

His 2002 film Âshûrâ: This Blood Spilled in My Veins, for instance, records the events of the annual Ashura ritual in Lebanon. It commemorates the massacre of Husayn Ibn Ali, a grandson of the Prophet Mohammed and son of the first Shi’ite Imam Ali and his family. In the battle of Karbala in 680 AD he was brutally murdered by a tribe of the hostile Umayyad caliphate dynasty. This battle is considered to have signalled the final schism between Shi’ites and Sunnites. For the Shi’ites, Husayn is a martyr whom they commemorate on the occasion of the Ashura festival. Without commentary, Toufic accompanies the faithful at prayer and in lamentation, films them mourning as they follow the report of the battle, and shows them in procession. In commemoration of the torment suffered, the mainly male participants flagellate themselves at the end of the ritual with swords and knives, inflicting serious injury on themselves. It seems that only the physical pain they suffer gives them authentic remembrance. By inserting excerpts from interviews with Derrida and Deleuze and comments of his own, Toufic manages to achieve a balance between theoretical explanation and ethnographic documentation. He examines the tradition of lamentation and self-flagellation in a vivid, sometimes disturbing manner, confronting these practices with philosophical concepts. At the same time he questions our image of Islam and mirrors the political situation in the Arab world.

Âshûrâ: This Blood Spilled in My Veins is a fascinated study of the relationship between ritual, remembrance, and history. The exhibition Filming Death at Work at the Kunsthalle Fridericianum assembles select video works from recent years and the film poster series Minor Art: Conceptual Film and Video Posters, consisting of 18 items referring to well-known cinema classics which the artist varies in a multi-faceted and disconcerting manner.
